The amount of generated wind energy has doubled

News

The information of the Latvian Transfer system operator JSC Augstsprieguma tīkls (AST) demonstrate that this year, in September and October, the wind power plants in Latvia have provided a two times bigger contribution to the total Latvian electricity balance than in the previous four years in these months.

In September the proportion of wind energy in the total balance is 4.3% or 16 381 MWh, but in October - 4.06% or 15 851 MWh. The sharp increase in the amount of energy generated by wind is explained with the first autumn storms, and since the tide to Daugava decreased, hydroelectric power stations generate less electricity and the percentage of wind energy increases. In August the wind power plants generated 7894 MWh electricity or just 1.7% of the total amount generated in the state.

The use of wind for electricity generation directly depends on the weather and the highest amount of generated electricity is usually observed in the period from October to January. This year the increase already started in September, within a period of four years the increase is also observed in October, except for 2017, when the amount of generated wind energy was slightly higher.

Starting from October, the electricity generated by all wind power plants is indicated separately in the monthly electricity market overview prepared by AST. Previously, only wind power plants that were connected to the transmission system were indicated separately, whereas other wind plants (for example, Grobiņa wind farm) in the overview were indicated together with other small (capacity up to 10 MW) generators.

The Latvian electricity market overview prepared by AST is available on the AST web page on the internet http://www.ast.lv/en/electricity-market-review
