Saeima Committee conceptually supports the proposal to disconnect from electricity networks of Russia and Belarus in test mode

Development

The Economic, Agricultural, Environmental and Regional Policy Committee has conceptually supported the proposal of the Ministry of Economics to perform a test in June 2019, during which Latvia, as well as Lithuania and Estonia would disconnect from the electricity networks of Russia and Belarus, or the so called BRELL ring, for 12 hours.

During the meeting, the Minister for Economics Arvils Aseradens stressed that this matter is one of the priorities of the European Union (EU) and by rejecting it, we would give a signal that the matter is not important for Latvia. The test is planned for the beginning of June 2019 and it will last for about 12 hours.

The Ministry of Economics informed that this would be the first test to identify the problems and necessary improvements, so that Latvia could switch to the European electricity network. To implement the test a test regulation is required, because in order to perform the test a preparatory process and legal mandate for the conclusion of international agreements on the test process is necessary.
