As part of the synchronisation project, the Baltic 330 kV transmission grid will be consolidated: 500 km of new power lines will be built and 800 km of existing power lines will be rebuilt. The transmission grid will be fundamentally reinforced through interconnections and countries' domestic power grids. Reinforcement of the power transmission grid will increase trading capacity between countries, as well as increase the reliability and stability of the overall power grid, as well as the ability to ensure continuous power even in the event of emergency disconnection of energy system elements, storms or other external circumstances.
At the same times as consolidating the power grid, substations within the Baltic States' energy systems are being rebuilt and newly built, reactive power compensation equipment is being installed, and the power metering and dispatcher control system is being modernised. At the same time, technologies never before used in the Baltic energy systems are being installed including synchronous condenser stations and battery energy storage systems.
