Implementation of the 15-Minute Market Time Unit Postponed to 30 September 2025

Market

The performance tests of the joint systems and procedures in preparation for the introduction of the 15-Minute Market Time Unit (MTU) in the European Single Day-Ahead Coupling (SDAC) electricity market have been successfully completed. During these tests, the majority of market participants demonstrated technical readiness for the originally planned go-live date of 11 June 2025. To ensure full readiness of all market participants for a harmonised transition to the 15-minute MTU across all participating countries, the Nominated Electricity Market Operators (NEMOs) and Transmission System Operators (TSOs) have agreed to postpone the go-live to 30 September 2025, with the first delivery date set for 1 October 2025.

This additional time will allow for further strengthening of local systems, processes, and market participants’ preparedness, ensuring a coordinated and smooth transition to the 15-minute MTU across the European electricity market.

The updated implementation timeline and readiness activities will be presented to stakeholders during the upcoming Market Coupling Consultative Group (MCCG) and Market Stakeholder Committee (MESC) meetings on 2 June and 3 July 2025, respectively.

NEMOs and TSOs, in close cooperation with market participants, will continue comprehensive testing activities to ensure the highest possible level of system and process readiness. All market participants are strongly encouraged to actively engage in the ongoing Market Participant Testing, which will continue throughout May and June 2025. These tests provide an opportunity to validate processes under simulated conditions and ensure full operational readiness by 1 October.

About SDAC:

SDAC allocates scarce cross-border transmission capacity in the most efficient way by coupling wholesale electricity markets from different regions through a common algorithm, simultaneously taking into account cross-border transmission constraints, thereby maximizing social welfare.

The aim of SDAC is to create a single pan European cross zonal day-ahead electricity market. An integrated day-ahead market increases the overall efficiency of trading by promoting effective competition, increasing liquidity, and enabling a more efficient utilization of generation resources across Europe.
