Significance of the project

After Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the risks facing the energy infrastructure of the Baltic States, which has historically operated within the energy grid controlled by Russia (the so-called BRELL transmission system) have increased. Energy security is also a matter of national security. In order to reduce these risks and the dependency of the energy system of the Baltic States on their eastern neighbours, and in order to be able to maintain their systems more independently and ensure a stable and reliable supply of energy for our consumers, the Baltic States will switch from Russia's unified energy system to Europe's energy system in February 2025 – a year earlier than originally planned.

Just like its integration into the European Union, NATO and the Eurozone, Latvia's integration into Europe's energy system is a decisively important and logical next step. The most comprehensive energy independence project in the Baltic States has been ongoing for the past 20 years with the construction of several new direct interconnections between countries and other investments aimed at strengthening energy grid infrastructure.

The Baltic States' synchronisation project is a strategic project with political and financial support from the European Union, and has been implemented with the close mutual cooperation of the Baltic States.
